Lesotho August Trip

Where to: Semonkong Lodge

The Route: We depart from Ficksburg at 09h00 and head off for the Peka Bridge border post, not far from Ficksburg. From there we drive through a scenic part of Lesotho via Thaba Bosiu, Roma and Ramabanta on our way to the Semonkong Lodge. This is an interesting drive as we cross over a few of the mountain kingdoms passes with fantastic scenery that will only be found in the remote parts of the mountains. We return the same way on Tuesday morning whilst headed for home. We will drive in convoy and will be in contact with each other at all times with 2 way radios.

About the Trip: This is a fantastic drive crossing numerous Maluti mountain tops and valleys along the way to the Lodge. Not far from the lodge are the Maletsunyane Falls, the highest single drop falls in Southern Africa. During the winter months, the falls have been known to virtually freeze over making for some very interesting photographs. We will spend some time on Sunday morning viewing the falls from different viewpoints, each view giving a true perspective of just how high and spectacular these falls really are.   Body Image 1

For the adventurous, they can take a guided horse ride from the lodge and meet us at the falls, both parties usually arriving at the falls at the same time as each other. For the truly adventurous adrenalin junkies and weather permitting you may abseil down the falls, this will earn you your Guinness Book of Records certificate for the highest single drop abseil in the world. A mean feat but you need to be brave and reasonably fit.

Activities are, Basotho Pony rides, Fly fishing, hiking, a donkey pub crawl into the local village (this is open to everyone, young and old and is one of the real highlights of the trip), the Maluti beers are really good, and of course, excellent 4x4 trails to be driven. Weather depending we may also encounter snow and ice along the way but that is really a bonus for all of us, and those Maluti Mountains covered in snow is a sight that will go into the memory bank forever.   Body Image 3

On Monday we take a pre-packed lunch box with us and we go off on a day's off road drive through the mountains. The drive is a great off-road drive and will require the use of low range, and quite possibly, the diff lock too.

Body Image 4   Living in the mountains has many hardships that we city folk are all too often completely unaware of and may never witness. With this in mind, we ask you to help ease the poor mountain folk's hardships a little by bringing along any old clothing that you no longer have any use for and possibly a few pens, pencils and paper or colouring in books for the children.

After a weekends trip such as this, one will return home with memories of how the mountain folk survive up in the majestic Maluti's.

On Tuesday morning it's an early start for the road home, reaching the border by around midday.

The lodge is very well run by the owners Armelle and Jonathan who go out of their way to make your stay there a pleasant and memorable one for all.

Logistics: Lesotho in the winter will drop down to sub-zero temperatures at night and sometimes during the early morning hours too. Pack accordingly for this trip, but rest assured that the lodge has fireplaces in all rooms as well as the restaurant; the bedding in the rooms is excellent as with the meals and menu that the lodge has on offer. A bottle of Old Brown Sherry works magic for keeping the blood warm.

Fuel is usually available in Semonkong, but it's wise to fill up in Matatiele.

All Covid-19 regulations will be in place for your safety.
